2005 Jefferson Award Recipient: Larry Whitney

Jefferson Award recipient Larry Whitney with Supervisor Gordon Larry Whitney has run the all-volunteer La Honda Fire Brigade responding to about 300 calls a year. The La Honda Fire Brigade serves the most rural area in San Mateo County. In addition to being a volunteer firefighter, Larry administers the Brigade office, maintains the equipment, and recruits and trains new volunteer fire fighters. As a reult of his commitment to public safety, Larry has gone above and beyond the call of duty to generate more than $1 million in grant funding to purchase a fire engine for the La Honda Fire Brigade as well as other state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment to ensure the best response and protection for his community and for the volunteer fire fighters.
 
For nine years, Larry's unwavering leadership has assured that La Honda has a viable fire department. through fostering volunteerism and
 community involvement.
