The San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Commission is responsible for establishing policies to guide the work of the San Mateo Department of Parks. This includes issues of parkland use management such as master plans, acquisitions, and development. Also included are programmatic issues such as recreational use in County parks, permits and reservations, fees, and gaps in service. The Commission is actively involved in helping set budget priorities and fostering the recruitment and placement of volunteers in County parks. This year's proposed projects and goals are outlined in the Parks Commission Annual Work Plan.

Commissioners receive input from citizens on County Parks' issues and make recommendations, as appropriate, to the Board of Supervisors. They also act as liaison to a number of support groups such as the Parks' Foundation, Trails Advisory Committee,Volunteer Roundtable, and other ad hoc committees that may be appointed. They may serve as Commission liaison to special projects, especially related to master plan developments.

To correspond with the Parks Commission please email the Commission Chair.

Meetings
Meetings of the Parks and Recreation Commission are held regularly on the first Thursday of every month at 2:30 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors Chambers, Hall of Justice, 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063 (map & directions). The Commission meeting room is wheel chair accessible. Additional meetings may be set by the Commission as needs arise. Meetings are held publicly and are conducted by a quorum of at least three of the Commissioners. Agendas are set for each meeting and minutes are recorded for actions taken.
Structure of the Commission
There are five Commissioners, each of whom represents one of the five Supervisorial Districts. Commissioners are appointed by the Supervisor elected from that District and serve terms concurrent with the Supervisors. There are also two Youth Commissioners who serve in an ex-officio capacity and represent the San Mateo County Youth Commission. Most Commissioners average 10 hours per month on Commission related business. Service as a Commissioner is as a volunteer. There is no compensation for this position. Back to top
