On Saturday September 29, 2007, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in association with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the Office of Homeland Security and twenty-five other City, County, State and Federal agencies will participate in a 50 hour tactical exercise dubbed "Urban Shield."
The four day event, hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, will use twenty-three different scenarios set up throughout the greater Bay Area to evaluate our regional response to real world emergencies and critical incidents. The exercise is designed to test the physical and mental skills of the participating tactical team members by systematically incorporating various levels of stress, anxiety, and physical exhaustion. Urban Shield will also test the effectiveness and efficiency of the participating agencies as they implement the National Incident Management System and the National Response plan in response to catastrophic events.
Of the twenty-three scenarios, four will be conducted in San Mateo County. Scenarios currently planned include:
- A tracking exercise utilizing Bloodhound(s).
- A suicidal Bridge Bomber.
- Missile launch in the area of a major airway security zone.
- "Smoke house" exercise.
