San Jose Sharks and Parks Tournament 2007
San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League
Fair Oaks School Hockey Teams' Championships
WHEN: Saturday, September 29, 2007 - "SJ Sharks and Parks Tournament."
WHAT: Three Fair Oaks School Sheriff's Activities League (SAL) teams won their age group's divisional championship in this year's annual street hockey tournament.
WHO: SAL entered three teams in the San Jose Sharks and Parks Tournament, an NHL Street Hockey Program.
The teams, all named the Fair Oaks Sharks, included 14 players from the 8-10 year old division, 17 players from the 11-12 year old division, and 13 players from the 13-15 year old division. All 44 players are from the North Fair Oaks neighborhood, located in unincorporated Redwood City.
The Fair Oaks Sharks were coached by former Fair Oaks students and SAL participants, including Joseph Contreras, Jose Pirita, Carlos Rivas and Chris Pacheco. Also coaching were Fair Oaks teachers, Rod Hong (13-15) and Tim Christianson.
The players enjoyed a wonderful day of exciting games, good sportsmanship, unselfish teamwork and rewarding success from their earlier fall practices. The players also received complimentary Sharks hats, posters and tickets to the exhibition night game against the Calgary Flames. Fun was had by all!
INFO ON SAL:
SAL provides 4th through 8th grade students from both Fair Oaks School and Garfield Charter School in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood, opportunities in supervised athletics, including street hockey, basketball, flag football, volleyball and soccer. All activities are free to the students. The only thing that is required of the kids is to stay out of trouble, complete their school work, do their homework and be a good role model.
The purpose of the program is to offer the kids from the neighborhood a positive experience to enjoy their after school time and a chance to develop skills in teamwork and sportsmanship.
Additionally, at Fair Oaks Schoool, students receive intensive, project-based instruction in Mexican Folklorico and Flamenco dance classes, and visual art classes, including ceramics, printmaking, drawing, painting, murals, bookmaking and sculpture from professional artists from the Bay Area.
Many former students assist as mentors, coaching, assisting, refereeing and tutoring the younger NFO youth. This relationship has increased the self-confidence and self-esteem of both groups.
