After almost thirteen years of protecting and
serving the citizens of San Mateo County as Sheriff, and over forty years
in law enforcement, Sheriff Don Horsley will make his final official appearance
on Thursday, January 4th 10:30 a.m. at the Ormondale School, 200 Shawnee
Pass, Portola Valley.
Sheriff Horsley will talk to the 1st and 2nd
grade students about school safety, making the right choices early in
life, and staying out of gangs. Sheriff Horsley began his public service
as a teacher at Fernando Rivera Middle School in Daly City. Through out
Sheriff's Horsley's term as Sheriff, he has emphasized and established
many innovative programs for San Mateo County's youth. These programs
include School Resource Officers, Juvenile Diversion, DARE, Gang Resistance
and STAR camp.
Sheriff Horsley's last day in office is January
8th and he will be replaced by Sheriff-elect Greg Munks, the current Undersheriff
who was elected Sheriff in June 2006. Sheriff Horsley leaves behind a
legacy of active community involvement and establishing innovative jail
programs geared towards the reentry of inmates into society and treatment
of mentally ill offenders.
