WIC (The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children)

Six WIC sites in the county provide comprehensive nutrition services to young families. These services include:
- Food vouchers for the purchase of nutritious foods such as milk, cheese, formula, juice, beans, cereals, eggs, peanut butter, and others.
- Nutritional assessment and counseling for each participant.
- Nutrition education classes covering such subjects as breast feeding, introduction of solids, baby bottle tooth decay, prenatal nutrition, childhood feeding, and lots more.
- Other education covering subjects of importance to young families, such as immunizations, childhood lead poisoning, childhood safety, anti-smoking education.
- Referral to other organizations and programs when needed (e.g. alcohol and drug, CCS, Smokefree Start for Families).
- Coordination of service with primary care provider.

This program focuses on nutrition education for food stamp recipients and other low-income families, with a special emphasis on prevention of chronic disease. Nutrition education presentations are available in English and Spanish to parent groups, church groups, ESL classes and other community organizations providing services in low-income communities. Teen Health Spa

The Teen Health Spa is a program for young women ages 12-16 who are concerned about their weight. The Spa consists of a total of eight hours of interactive instruction. Some of the topics covered during the sessions are: healthy snacks, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise, body-image, self-esteem and cultural issues.
Physical activity is highly encouraged and the teens are introduced to hiking in our local parks. For follow-up they receive our bimonthly "Teen Health Spa Newsletter" filled with nutrition information as well as other health information of interest to teen girls. Copies of this newsletter are also available to agencies working with low-income teenage girls.
The Teen Health Spa lesson plans can be adopted to different settings: after school programs, Girl's Clubs, public libraries, shelters and YMCA. We can modify the program to meet specific needs. The spa theme provides nutrition education in a fun and nuturing environment. There is no fee for this program.
Women's Health Spa

This is an interactive nutrition education program with a "Spa" theme for women of all ages. The two to three hour workshop focuses on womens' health issues as they relate to nutrition. Topices of interest include: weight managment, skin care, cancer, diabetes, body image, food preparation and exercise. This workshop is available to agencies serving low-income women such as shelters, clinics, church groups, senior citizen's groups and other community groups. There is no fee for this program.
Shapedown: A Weight Managment Program for Children & Teens
Offered through the Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM) & San Mateo County’s CHDP Program Shapedown is a weight management program designed for children, teens and their parents. Kids learn to make healthy eating choices and fun physical activity a part of their family lifestyle. Shapedown focuses on building self-esteem, family communication, and parenting skills. The program is offered in English only.
Q: How long is the program?
A: Shapedown groups run for 8 weeks and usually meet in the early evening.
Q: Who is eligible?
A: Children & teens that are 6-18 years old, and Health Plan of San Mateo Members (Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, or Healthy Kids)

Child Nutrition Program
Nutrition Services staff within the Health Department provide meals for toddler and preschool centers throughout San Mateo County. The menus, which are developed by a Registered Dietitian, are ethnically diverse and meet USDA Guidelines for Child Nutrition Programs.
