Young Dads Group
The Young Dads Group is a group of English speaking fathers 26 years old and younger who reside and/or receive services in San Mateo County. The group is designed to promote and enhance healthy relationships among fathers and their children by enhancing the following skills: parenting, negotiation, relationships building, as well as improving knowledge around share-parenting and corrective discipline, health promoting behaviors, and providing opportunities for fathers to connect with family mediation services, individual and couples counseling, county resources, and finally to provide venues for father-child interactions (picnics, field trips, family events). Participants are provided a $10 incentive for each session. Transportation is available as needed.
Young Mothers Advisory Council
This youth development/peer advocacy group is comprised of 8-10 teen mothers and their children who are active clients in the Adolescent Family Life Programs (AFLP). Each council member is asked to provide a 1-year commitment and a stipend is provided at the end of each 8-session cycle. A youth development curriculum is currently being piloted written specifically for teen parents and their children. Additional activities for this peer advocacy group include attending local and regional conferences for teens, field trips to parks, zoos, pumpkin patch, children's museums, speaking to groups of providers and peers, as well as co-hosting a holiday party for teen parents and their families with the LOVE ME Group and Young Dads Group. Childcare, snacks and transportation are provided for all activities.
LOVE ME
The LOVE ME Group is a Spanish-speaking teen mother's support group providing the tools and resources pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children need. The weekly meetings offer a positive atmosphere that encourages peer networking thereby alleviating social isolation and depression. Health education discussions have included, but are not limited to domestic violence, nutrition, birth control, as well as mental health and sexually transmitted disease prevention. Art projects are holiday related and a field trip to a local park is usually included in the curriculum. The LOVE ME Group serves to educate and promote healthy relationships between pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children, families and community. Transportation and a $10 incentive to Target per session are provided. Car seats are required for pick up. Groups are currently being held at the East Palo Alto Boy's & Girl's Club each Wednesday from 11am - 1pm.
