Coyote Point Marina  Printer Friendly View

Located just off of Highway 101 in the City of San Mateo, approximately 10 miles south of San Francisco, the Marina is part of the Coyote Point Recreation Area. The Marina is sited off the north-eastern area of the point with direct access to the San Francisco Bay. The Marina can accommodate 565 boats in slips ranging from 24' to 50' in length and single side ties for vessels up to 22'. Our warm climate and mid-peninsula location make for an ideal boating environment. History

Archaeological evidence shows that Coyote Point was first occupied by Native Americans as early as 4,000 years ago. The first boats to call here were tule rafts used for fishing by the Ohlone tribe. During the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, the western side of the point was home to a series of commercial and recreational piers and wharves. In 1922 this site became home to the Pacific City Amusement Park which opened in July of that year. This ‘Coney Island of the West’ boasted rides, restaurants, games and a dance pavilion, but was short-lived due to the bankruptcy of the company that owned it in 1923. By the 1930's the eastern side of the point was earning a reputation as a popular small craft anchorage, and the County of San Mateo responded to this interest by building a small marina here in the 1940's. During World War II Coyote Point served as a U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet School, the training mast from which currently serves as the flagpole for the harbor office. After the war, Coyote Point was utilized as the first home of the College of San Mateo, preceding its conversion to a county park. In the past fifty years the Marina has expanded considerably, and continues to provide people with convenient access to the San Francisco Bay as it has done for over 4,000 years.

The Coyote Point Marina is located just east of the Burlingame/San Mateo city line off of US101.

Water Directions:

Your best course for the Marina would be to head up (or down) the deepwater channel, until you find red marker "8" on the west side of the channel, in between the San Francisco International Airport and the San Mateo Bridge. The entrance to the Marina bears approximately 235 deg. true (220 mag.) from channel marker "8". During the day Coyote Point is visible from well out in the bay as a prominent hill covered with trees, and during the night it is noticable as being a dark patch against the lights of San Mateo and Burlingame. The channel entrance is flanked by two markers, green "1" and red "2", which are lighted at night. At night the Marina can also be distinguished by a rotating beacon atop the Coyote Point Yacht Club, and a set of amber range lights. (see NOAA chart 18651). GPS coordinates for the Coyote Point Marina entrance are: 37 deg. 35' 38" N, 122 deg. 18' 45" W.

Note: Tidal currents can add or subtract a considerable amount of time to your passage on the Bay, make sure you check the status of the tides when calculating your estimated arrival and departure times. Weather conditions should also be monitored. See our links to check the Coastal Marine Forecast.

Road directions:

Approaching from the north on US101 you will want to take the Poplar Avenue exit, then make a right on Humboldt Street at the schoolbus yard, go straight until making another right onto Peninsula. Follow Peninsula over the overpass and turn left onto Bayshore Boulevard, go under the overpass, then left onto Coyote Point Drive. Drive past the park and the golf course until you can see boats, make the first left near the water if you want to go to the Marina office- a two-story grey building with big windows and a large flagpole behind it.

A second way of getting to the Marina from northbound 101 is to take the Peninsula Avenue exit, and turn right immediately upon exiting the freeway, go under the overpass and then turn left at the next intersection, which will put you on Coyote Point Drive.

Approaching from the south on US101 you will want to take the Dore exit, turning left immediately upon exiting onto Bayshore Boulevard. Follow Bayshore between 101 and the golf course, turning right at the intersection onto Coyote Point Drive to keep the golf course on your right. Drive past the park and the golf course until you can see boats, make the first left near the water if you want to go to the Marina office- a two-story grey building with big windows and a large flagpole behind it.

Berthing Information
Berth Description, Pricing and Availability

If you are looking for a long term berth, the staff here at the Coyote Point Marina hopes that we can meet your needs and look forward to helping you get the most out of your boat-owning experience.  First of all, you should be aware that Coyote Point is a recreational facility and living aboard or using the vessel as a weekday apartment is prohibited.

The Coyote Point Marina has 565 berths, able to accommodate boats from less than 22' to over 50' in length. Multihull berths are also available and range in size from 20' to 40' in length.

Berth availability changes from week to week so please contact us to find out what our status is at the moment.

The Marina has an entrance channel depth of 12'.  Within the harbor depth varies depending on location.

We assign berths based on total boat length which includes anything protruding over the bow or stern of the vessel: anchors, outboard motors, swim steps, dinghies, bowsprits, davits, etc.  Boats can be only one foot (12") longer than the berth assigned (i.e. a boat has to be 41' overall or less in order to fit in a 40' slip).

Each berth from 24' to 50' has included in its monthly rate not only the concrete double side-tie berth, but also a dock box for storage, a dockside 30 amp twistlock electrical receptacle and a bib for attaching a hose.  For boats 22' or less we have side ties along several of our docks, which do not have dock boxes or utilities, and this is reflected in the monthly rate.  We also have several side ties that are restricted by length and/or depth, but may be available at a lower rate.

Remember: living aboard or using the vessel as a weekday apartment is prohibited.

Options for Acquiring a Berth

Even if we do not presently have any open berths available for your size boat we do have other options.  The most common options are sub-letting opportunities from our current tenants who are either out cruising or whose boats are temporarily out of their berths for service.  Contact the Marina office for more details.

Another option is to put your name on our 'wait list,' a chronologically arranged list of names we maintain so that when a berth comes open we can call whoever has been waiting the longest for it.
