ADMINISTRATION
Administration's primary mission is to prepare the department to successfully meet the challenges and opportunities that the 21st Century will bring to San Mateo County.

CUSTODY PROGRAMS - house minimum security-risk male and minimum and high security risk female inmates. Consists of:

  • Electronic Monitoring Program.
  • Men's Minimum Security Transitional Facility.
  • Sheriff's Work Program.
  • Women's Correctional Center.

COURT & SECURITY SERVICES - provide security to the Courts and countywide facilities as well as service and enforcement of warrants and civil processes. Consists of:

  • Civil Bureau.
  • Countywide Security Unit.
  • Court Services.
  • Inmate Transportation.

DETENTION DIVISION
The Detention Division provides incarceration and rehabilitative services to pre-trial and court-sentenced inmates. The facility's staff serves the Court, other law enforcement agencies, inmates and their families and crime victims by operating a safe and secure correctional facility.

OPERATIONS DIVISION
  • PATROL - promotes community and neighborhood safety through provision of basic patrol and community policing services, school-based resource officers, youth programming through the Sheriff’s Activities League, family counseling.
  • Emergency Services Bureau - provides Search and Rescue [SAR] and Law Enforcement Support Services such as missing persons searches, water and cliff rescues, some crime scene searches, tactical law enforcement support.

  • Area Office of Emergency Services / Homeland Security - provides emergency planning, training, preparedness exercises and field response to San Mateo County and its' cities.
  • INVESTIGATIONS- combines six separate units that provide in-depth law enforcement investigative services throughout the County. In addition to criminal investigation, the Unit has daily contact with crime victims and witnesses, troubled youth, school educators, judiciary, federal, state and municipal law enforcement officers and District Attorney's Offices.

SUPPORT SERVICES DIVISION
The Support Services Division provides overall management, policy-setting, procedural guidance, technical systems support and leadership, fiscal and administrative support services and acts as community liaison for the Sheriff's Office and several law enforcement joint powers agencies to ensure that effective, responsive and fiscally sound services are provided. The Support Services Division consists of:


MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL SERVICES
  • Forensic Crime Laboratory - forensic scientists utilize established scientific tests and procedures to analyze evidence from crime scenes to make associations between suspects and victims.

  • High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area [HIDTA] - partnership between more than 100 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working to reduce availability of illicit drugs and drug-related crime and violence.

  • Narcotics Task Force [CNTF] - focuses on illegal drug labs, farming or importation operations, mid-to-high level drug sales and trafficking and distribution gangs.

  • Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team [REACT] - partnership of 16 local, state, and federal agencies which investigates a variety of high tech crimes from theft of equipment and components to internet identity theft to industrial high tech espionage.

  • Special Weapons and Tactics Team [SWAT] - provides specialized support during critical incidents, to conduct tactical operations in a high-risk environment, and to provide crisis negotiations.

  • Vehicle Theft Task Force [VTTF] - investigates vehicle theft, insurance fraud, and other motor vehicle-related crimes.
