another law enforcement agency within the County.
- You must be the Registered
Owner.
- You must have a picture
ID & someone who has a valid Drivers License.
- You should know the
vehicle license number.
- After Hours - If you
are requesting a vehicle release after normal office hours, on weekends,
or holidays - you must proceed to the Maguire
Correctional Facility at 330 Bradford Street, just across
the street from the Hall of Justice & Records in order for your
request to be processed.
RESTRAINING
ORDERS:
Sheriff's
Records Bureau is the repository for ALL Restraining Orders issued by
the San Mateo County Courts. All Restraining Orders containing required
information are entered into the Department of Justice's Restraining Order
System and filed for law enforcement confirmation.
A "Restraining
Order Information" sheet is required to accompany the restraining order.
If one is not included, the requester will be given the form to fill out.
The following
restraining orders are MANDATED for entry into the Department of Justice's

* All Domestic
Violence Restraining Orders are served FREE OF CHARGE. Per Government
Code Section 26721, no fee is charged for serving a Restraining Order
issued pursuant to Division 10 of the Family Code on a Respondent who
is in Custody.
The Records
Bureau also accepts served "Proof of Service". They also need to be filed
with the Court within the specified time period.
An out of
state restraining order must be accompanied by a completed DV-600 form
that has the court filed stamp from a California Court.
If a copy
of the restraining order is needed, go to the Clerk of the Courts Records
desk.

VISA
/ CLEARANCE LETTERS [Police
Clearance, Hunting Clearance, Equestrian Permits, Booking Chronology]
FEE: $11.00
These letters
document the applicant's arrest and booking records in San Mateo County,
with disposition, if available. If disposition is not available, the applicant
will be advised to go the Arresting Agency and/or Court to obtain the
disposition.
- Applicant is required
to provide a valid and current form of identification containing a
photo and signature of the applicant. The only acceptable valid and
current ID is either:
- A U.S. Federal or State government ID;
or
- A foreign passport.
- Applicant is required
to fill out an APPLICATION
FORM (PDF).
- The Records Bureau
will review and confirm the completed Application Form for accuracy
before a RECORDS SEARCH is conducted to see if the applicant has any
active warrants.
- If the applicant has
ACTIVE WARRANTS(s), he/she will be advised to take care of the warrant(s)
before the Records Bureau can proceed with issuance of a VISA or Clearance
letter.
- If the applicant does
not have any active warrant(s), an immediate payment of the $11.00
processing fee is required. A receipt will be issued to the applicant.
- Processing a clearance
letter takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes to COMPLETE.
- The COMPLETED clearance
letter may be mailed or can be picked up at the Records Bureau. It
is up to the applicant to indicate this on the application form.
EQUESTRIAN
PERMIT:
FEE: $11.00
The Records Bureau begins the processing of this
permit [confirming if the applicant has any active warrant(s)]
and then it is turned over to the Sheriff's secretary to complete the
process.

CITATION
INFORMATION for Sheriff's
Office, San Mateo County Transit District (samTrans), and Peninsula Corridor
Joint Powers Board (Caltrain) may be obtained via:

- The requester must provide
us with the CITATION NUMBER and DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER.
- When requesting Citation
information in person, proof of identification (Picture ID) is required.
- Citation information
can only be released if it was ISSUED BY a San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff.
The most requested information
is:
- Court Location.
- Appearance Date and
Time.
- Bail Information (Requester
will be referred to the appropriate Court).
- Requested information
will be given to the Requester or may be referred to the appropriate
Court for further information.
A copy of the Citation can ONLY be given to the
Requester if a Citation number is provided.

SERVICE
OF CIVIL BENCH WARRANTS INFORMATION:

IMPORTANT: Only Civil Bench Warrants ISSUED in San Mateo County can be
accepted to be served outside of San Mateo County.
If the Civil Bench Warrant is to be served in San Mateo County, the requester
will be directed to the Sheriff's Civil
Bureau.
REQUIREMENTS:
- The ORIGINAL
Civil Bench Warrant. The Civil Bench Warrant should be filled out
completely, including the following information (if available):
- The top left corner
of the warrant should be filled out with the name and address
of the attorney or party without an attorney for notification
of when the warrant has been served.
- The defendant's
identification information (i.e., residence and business addresses,
date of birth, sex, height, weight, race, color of eyes and hair,
any distinguishing features, driver's license number, social security
number and automobile information).
- Defendant's name,
date of birth and residence or business address.
- Requester must submit
a "Letter of Instruction", indicating the name of the person to be
served and the location of where it is to be served.
- For a Fail to Appear
(FTA) on an Order of Exam, the requestor must also bring a money order
for $50 made out to the name of the Sheriff of the County of the defendant;s
location (home or working address) where the Civil Bench warrant is
to be served.
- For a FTA on a Subpoena or Court Order, the
requestor must also bring a money order for $105 made out to the name
of the Sheriff of the County of the defendant's location (home or
working address) where the Civil Bench earrant is to be served.
