CUSTODY PROGRAMS: Houses minimum security-risk male and minimum and high security-risk female inmates in a safe and secure environment and provides public and rehabilitative services to:

  • promote community safety;
  • support the successful transition of inmates back into the community;
  • prevent overcrowding; and
  • reduce costs at the Maguire Correctional Facility; and provides cost savings to government agencies.

Under authority of Penal Code §1203.016, and by order of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Electronic Monitoring Program was established as an alternative to incarceration in 1995. Utilizing advanced electronic equipment and personal surveillance, the Electronic Monitoring Program provides an alternative to incarceration for low risk offenders with stable housing environments. Carefully screened participants must either be employed, attend school or attend treatment programs, and pay an income-based fee for participation. In this County, by Court Order, the Courts must specifically recommend the participants for the Program.

Used to ease the overcrowding of Maguire Correctional Facility that began when the Men’s Correctional Center was closed. The facility had a capacity rating of 30 until December 2003 when the Board of Corrections increased the capacity rating to 46. Since that time the average daily population has increased to the new maximum allowed.

Sheriff's Work Program.

Established in 1983 as an alternative to high cost incarceration and full-time confinement in a jail facility for those persons considered as low-risk, minimum security offenders.

Defendants serve time by participating in a work program and by performing public projects in lieu of confinement, while remaining productive members of the community. Participants pay a fee for participation, further reducing operational costs and costs to the County.

rovides security, care and custody for approximately 100 - 130 inmates and is committed to providing a myriad of rehabilitative services.


COURT AND SECURITY SERVICES:Provides security to the Courts and Countywide facilities, including the secure transportation of inmates throughout the County to ensure workplace safety for all citizens and employees visiting or working in Court and County facilities.

Inmate Transportation.
Transports inmates in a safe, secure and efficient manner to the Courts and other facilities so that escapes and threats to the public safety are avoided.

Provides service and enforcement of warrants and civil processes.
Services are mandated and follow strict procedures. The Unit performs Countywide evictions, possession levies, sales of both real and personal property, and service of domestic violence restraining orders, welfare fraud and some child support warrants.

Provides security for all County facilities and maintains a safe environment for all County employees and visitors to County facilities.

Court Services.
Provides protection for the Superior Court's 33 permanent judicial departments and pro-tem courtrooms, located in four courthouses throughout the County.
